About Electrician Skills lab

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and the Workplace

The Electrical Skills Lab was established to address one of the biggest challenges in the electrical industry:
the gap between academic knowledge and real, hands-on workplace competence.

Every year, thousands of learners complete N1–N6 Electrical Engineering or related theory-based programmes, yet struggle to find employment or qualify for trade testing due to a lack of practical experience.

The Electrical Skills Lab exists to solve this problem by providing structured, supervised, and logged practical training that prepares learners for real work environments and trade testing.

Who the Electrical Skills Lab Is For

The program is designed to support learners at any stage of their electrical journey, including:

  • Individuals with no prior electrical training

  • Learners with N1 – N6 Electrical Engineering

  • Electrical assistants and helpers

  • Working technicians seeking to upgrade skills

  • Solar PV installers wanting stronger electrical foundations

  • Learners preparing for trade test readiness

Each learner is assessed individually and trained according to their current competence level.

How it works

1. Initial Skills Assessment

2. Logbook & Practical Hour Tracking

2. Logbook & Practical Hour Tracking

All learners begin with an assessment to determine:

  • Current practical ability

  • Electrical knowledge level

  • Safety awareness

  • Appropriate entry level into the Skills Lab

2. Logbook & Practical Hour Tracking

2. Logbook & Practical Hour Tracking

2. Logbook & Practical Hour Tracking

Upon assesment, learners receive an official Electrical Skills Lab Logbook.

  • Daily tasks performed

  • Practical skills completed

  • Hours accumulated

  • Assessor verification and sign-off

✔ All hours are verified and signed off by a qualified assessor
✔ Logged hours contribute toward practical experience required for trade testing
✔ Logbooks serve as evidence of experience for employers and recruiters

Available courses

Practical Skills Programme (Trade Test Focused)

Training follows a progressive, skills-based structure, supported by focused theory sessions before each task.

Foundational Electrical Skills

  • Electrical safety and PPE

  • Hand tools and power tools

  • Cable types, sizing, and identification

  • Measuring, marking, and planning

  • Reading basic electrical drawings

Domestic & Commercial Installation

  • Steel conduit bending and installation

  • PVC conduit, trunking, and surface wiring

  • Lighting and socket outlet circuits

  • Distribution board wiring (single-phase)

  • Earth leakage units and protective devices

  • Earthing and bonding

  • Domestic fault finding and testing

Motor Testing & Fault Finding

  • Continuity testing

  • Insulation resistance (megger) testing

  • Phase balance testing

  • Identification of common motor faults

  • Safe testing and reporting procedures

Motor Control & Industrial Electrical Skills

Learners are trained and assessed on:

  • Direct-On-Line (DOL) motor starters

  • Forward–Reverse motor control

    • Electrical and mechanical interlocking

  • Star–Delta motor starters

    • Control and power circuits

    • Timer sequencing

  • Sequence Start Circuits

    • Timed and logical motor starting

  • Control circuit wiring (start/stop, latching)

  • Use of contactors, overloads, relays, and timers

  • Panel layout and neat wiring practices

  • Industrial fault-finding simulations

Theory-Before-Task Training Model

Before each practical activity, learners receive a short, focused theory session covering: What the task is, Why it is done, How it applies in the workplace, Common trade test and site errors and Safety considerations This ensures learners understand the work, not just how to copy it.

Trade Test Preparation & Simulation

The Skills Lab prepares learners for the real demands of trade testing, including:

  • Independent wiring tasks

  • Time-based exercises

  • Control circuit logic

  • Fault diagnosis and correction

  • Safe, methodical working under pressure

Learners who complete the programme are significantly better prepared for trade tests and workplace expectations.

QCTO Alignment & Artisan Development Pathway

The Electrical Skills Lab is aligned with QCTO Occupational Qualification principles, specifically the Electrician occupational pathway.

QCTO qualifications consist of:

  1. Knowledge Modules

  2. Practical Skills Modules

  3. Work Experience Modules

The Skills Lab focuses on Practical Skills and Work Experience, supported by task-based theory sessions.

QCTO-Aligned Outcomes Covered:

  • Domestic and commercial electrical installation

  • Motor control systems (DOL, Forward-Reverse, Star-Delta, Sequence Start)

  • Control circuits and panel wiring

  • Electrical testing and fault finding

  • Safety and workplace practices

  • Documented practical experience

Exposure, Site Placement & recruiting

(Subject to availability)

Exposure & Site Placement

Where opportunities exist, selected learners may be placed:

  • On real electrical or solar installation sites

  • Alongside experienced technicians

  • Under supervision of qualified electricians

All site-based work may be logged and signed off where applicable.
Placements are performance-based and limited.
